This special appointment provides a stipend of $11,520 for the 2025-2026 academic year and a tuition waiver up to 18 credit hours per academic year which can be applied to any academic session offered during the academic year, including the trailing summer term.  All fees will be the responsibility of the student regardless of online or on-campus enrollment.  A total (maximum) of 640 hours of work is required for this Graduate Assistantship. Typically, twenty (20) hours of work will be assigned per week by your supervisor during the Academic Year. Withdrawal from all classes, failure to maintain graduate academic standards or completion of a graduate degree at any point during the academic year will result in the termination of this appointment and proration of stipend payments.

 

Job Summary

Nature of Work: 

Graduate Assistants are hired at Chadron State College to assist in meeting the vision and goals established for CSC. Strategic deployment of graduate assistant positions is essential to ensure that limited resources are utilized in a manner consistent with the philosophy of CSC. Graduate assistants provide experiential learning in select areas and to assist the individual in a successful transition to future educational and professional opportunities.

 

Example of Work Performed: 

Digitizing herbarium resources (electronic capture of herbarium specimens and data through image capture, databasing and georeferencing).

Museum collections management tasks including carrying out the day-to-day operations of preparing and caring for specimens.

Field Botany tasks including locating and assessing natural environments, utilizing sustainable processes to collect and preserve specimens, and taking photographs of specimens.

Collect precise data in the field of the locality (including latitude, longitude and elevation) with metadata, as well as description of the physical and biological settings and the relative abundance and ephemeral characteristics of plants encountered and summarize these data on a label to accompany each specimen collected and use herbarium resources to identify each of the species.

To conduct floristic surveys of at least two woodland sites in the Pine Ridge ecoregion of Nebraska and South Dakota.

To identify all species of vascular plants and mosses at these sites as part of a biogeographic survey of the Pine Ridge ecosystem.
