Job Summary:
The Director of Research Compliance (referred to here as “the Director”) works within University and Compliance, in conjunction with the Office of Research and Creative Activity in the promotion of ethical leadership and the enforcement of regulations and principles pertaining to research and research integrity, in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, as well as University policies and procedures. The Director is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and monitoring of an effective research integrity and compliance program and for the coordination of institution-wide initiatives to prevent, detect, and respond appropriately to compliance risks. The Director is responsible for assessing and identifying the need for and implementation of new research integrity and compliance policies and procedures. The Director will manage regulatory compliance issues related to: export control and ITAR compliance, scientific integrity (e.g., responsible conduct of research, conflict of interest, research misconduct), the welfare of research subjects (e.g., human subjects, animals) and the environment (e.g., recombinant DNA, biohazards, radioactive materials), and other compliance requirements (e.g., federal regulations and reporting). The Director will serve as the campus research integrity officer and will coordinate with other compliance officials at UNO and within the University of Nebraska system.
The Director of Research Compliance serves as a key member of the University of Nebraska Compliance Program, focused on developing and overseeing the implementation of the Research Compliance Program. The Director manages and oversees the research compliance team including supervising compliance team personnel and directing all aspects of research integrity and research compliance activities at the University of Nebraska Omaha. The Director works within University Compliance to serve other compliance related goals including proactive compliance reviews, and serves the university community as the primary reviewer and approver for international travel.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in any combination of the following: 1) research compliance and ethics in an academic setting, 2) federal, state, and/or private foundation funding sources and regulatory bodies, 3) the interpretation and application of regulations, laws, policies, and procedures, and 4) the writing, review, and negotiation of contracts and agreements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree
- M.S., M.A., J.D., Ph.D. or other advanced degree in an appropriate academic field.
- Experience in legal compliance
- Maintenance of an active attorney license
