Animal Genetics and Genomics Technologist
Job Description

Job Summary:

The Animal Genetics and Genomics Lab focuses on identifying genetic variants that influence phenotypic traits and understanding how the genome responds to environmental and physiological stressors. The lab also develops tools such as breed-specific reference genomes and functional annotations to better characterize genome regulation and breed-specific variation. In addition, the lab conducts population genetics studies to assess current breed diversity and monitor changes over time, using pedigree and historic genotype data to examine trends in genetic diversity across generations.

As an Animal Genetics and Genomics Technologist, you will:

  • Conduct research as outlined by the supervisor (DNA/RNA isolation, cell culture, Western blot, PCR primer design, and PCR/rtPCR/ddPCR).
  • Manage computer databases including sample inventory, standard operating procedures, and protocols.
  • Oversee purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Train new students and other lab members in research techniques.
  • Assist other lab members in completing their research assignments.
  • Feed and provide general care of ruminant animals and/or horses for research studies, including data and sample collection.

The position will occasionally require irregular hours and possible travel. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as Research Technologist II.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biologicial sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field plus three (3) years of experience conducting research in a laboratory setting; OR
  • Master's degree in biological sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field plus one (1) year of experience conducting research in a laboratory setting.
  • Additional years of completed relevant education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Knowledge of lab safety and lab techniques.
  • Experience with data management.
  • Experience leading a team. 

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required:

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with nucleic acid isolation, cDNA synthesis, PCR, qPCR, cell culture, or DNA and RNA sequence isolation and sequencing.
  • Experience performing statistical analysis of data.
  • Experience managing inventory.
  • Experience training others.
  • Experience with animal handling and/or animal husbandry.
