Job Summary:

The Nebraska Statewide Workforce and Educational Reporting System (NSWERS) seeks a student to join their communications team as the NSWERS Communications Intern. Reporting to the Communications Director, the NSWERS Communications Intern will support data storytelling and outreach efforts by translating data and research into clear, engaging content. This position is ideal for a journalism/communications student interested in communications, public information, and data-driven storytelling. The intern will help create social media content, support the development of data visualizations, and assist in communicating insights from data to a broad audience. This student will develop a variety of skills applicable to work as part of a communications team, including writing for social media platforms, basic data visualization and graphic design, and developing content for data storytelling. Such experiences may include working with the Adobe Creative Suite, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Bluesky, Mailchimp, and other communications tools and best practices.

About Us:

The Nebraska Statewide Workforce & Educational Reporting System, or NSWERS, is an interlocal agency with member representatives from Nebraska's six Community Colleges, the Nebraska Department of Education, the Nebraska State College System, the University of Nebraska System, and in affiliation with the Nebraska Department of Labor. NSWERS enables seamless integration of data across educational and workforce systems, provides data literacy education, and promotes the use of this data to further evidence-based policy and practices across Nebraska's educational landscape.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled at University of Nebraska-Lincoln in journalism, communications, marketing, media studies, or a related field
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Interest in data journalism, storytelling with data, or public information reporting.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, contributing to shared goals and supporting colleagues.
  • Demonstrated initiative in proactively proposing new ideas and process improvements that add value to the team.
  • Willingness to work up to 20 hours a week on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience writing for digital platforms or social media.
  • Familiarity with social media management tools or content scheduling platforms.
  • Basic experience with data visualization or graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools).
  • Interest in data journalism, visual storytelling, or explanatory reporting.
  • Ability to identify compelling narratives within research or data.

 

Learning Opportunities:

  • Gain hands-on experience translating data and research into public-facing products and posts.
  • Develop skills in data visualization and visual communication.
  • Build a portfolio of digital content, including social media posts and data-driven narratives.

Additional Information:

The schedule for this position is 20 hrs/week year-round, with flexibility of up to 40 hrs/week during the summer.
