Job Summary:

The University of Nebraska at Kearney Police Department is seeking a highly motivated and professional candidate to serve as Corporal. The ideal candidate will be a certified law enforcement officer in good standing, demonstrating integrity, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to community-oriented policing within a university environment. This individual will possess proven experience in criminal investigations, with the ability to effectively gather, analyze, and document information while maintaining attention to detail and adherence to legal standards. The Corporal will be expected to take a leadership role in guiding officers, supporting supervisory functions, and ensuring high standards of performance and accountability. A strong emphasis will be placed on crime prevention education. The ideal candidate will be proactive in developing and delivering educational programs to students, faculty, and staff, fostering awareness, safety, and trust across campus. Effective communication skills and the ability to engage diverse audiences are essential.The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, leadership, and a collaborative mindset, while maintaining professionalism in all interactions. A commitment to continuous improvement, training, and service to the university community is critical to success in this role.

 

Plans, directs, supervises, assigns, and participate in the work of Law Enforcement staff involved in traffic control, and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities; serves as watch commander on an assigned shift, oversees and participates in all work activities; assumes responsibility for assigned special program, projects, or department-wide functions and activities; coordinates activities with other agencies’ and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area and responsibility. Supervises and monitors all new recruits through the Field Training process (FTO). Oversees Crime Prevention efforts on campus and is the lead Investigator for the campus Police Department.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School education or GED
  • Two years of Law Enforcement experience
  • Current Nebraska Certified Law Enforcement Officer or the ability to obtain certification via reciprocity at the next available opportunity.
  • Requires a valid driver's license with a minimum of 6 points, good driving record and no criminal offenses

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in criminal justice or a similar related field
  • Two years of Law Enforcement experience with preference in investigations and education.
  • Ability to give presentations and teach crime prevention initiatives to college age students. Investigations and experience with the court system.
