Job Description

Job Summary:

A major donor of the College of Engineering (COE) has committed $5M towards this new position in order to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Excellence Initiative in the college that will enhance faculty and student research and education. This position will advance the development, implementation, and integration of AI- and data-driven academic programs and research within the COE and across the UNL campus. The role requires deep technical expertise, effective collaboration with faculty and industry partners, and broad understanding of AI and data science applications in engineering and related disciplines. The incumbent will help coordinate and support AI-related research initiatives and funding opportunities in the college and on the UNL campus, contribute to AI-related undergraduate and graduate curriculum development, and promote ethical and responsible AI implementation in engineering education and research.

 

The successful candidate for this position will be a recognized and collaborative leader with a strong understanding of the capabilities and potential implications of AI and data science in higher education, and an ability to position UNL as a leader in engineering and interdisciplinary AI research. The position requires demonstrated experience in managing complex research projects, fostering partnerships, and advancing data-driven innovation that supports faculty and student success.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in computer science, data science, or a related field.
  • Five years relevant experience including the following:
    • Leadership in data science or AI project management.
    • Demonstrated success in managing complex data or AI research projects.
    • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work effectively with diverse teams.
    • Experience developing and implementing new initiatives and technical strategies.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to mentor staff and students in data and AI-related projects.
    • Aptitude for problem-solving in complex, multidisciplinary environments.
    • Experience engaging with AI-related start-up companies or innovation initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience applying AI and data science in engineering-related or interdisciplinary projects in a higher education setting.
  • Proven ability to secure external funding and manage research or technical projects.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies and data infrastructure supporting research.
  • Commitment to ethical, transparent, and inclusive AI and data practices.
