Job Description

Job Summary:

Advise current and prospective students in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, implementing knowledge of policies, curriculum, and other programs across campus.Use interpersonal communication and relational skills to engage in collaborative advising conversations with students and share developmentally appropriate advice in regard to academic /course planning, extracurricular involvement/exploration, and professional preparation. Apply comprehensive advising strategies with students based on understanding of how cultural context, differences, and institutional/social barriers may influence the student experience. Assist students in understanding academic standards and major/minor/emphasis selections. Encourage overall well-being and adjustment to the university as well as exploration of interests as they relate to areas of study. Serve as a referral agent to appropriate resources to meet the diverse needs of students. Develop and deliver presentations to various-sized audiences, which may include students, parents, staff and/or faculty. Participate in recruitment and retention efforts, including Red Letter Days, campus visits, and New Student Enrollment. Collaborate with other campus offices to engage in best practices and to develop programming to support student retention and success.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least two (2) years of experience in higher education with evidence of 1:1 student interaction in advising or related areas such as student affairs.
  • Master’s degree in related field may substitute for experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with varied student populations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competency with common office software programs and ability to use a variety of technology platforms are essential to this role.

Preferred Qualifications (but not required):

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, education, administration, counseling, or related field.
  • Academic advising experience.
  • Experience with college students helpful.
  • Experience providing academic and/or social support for first-generation, low-income, and/or minority college students. 
  • Background in fine and performing arts. 
  • Prior use of student information technology and platforms.
  • Knowledge of student records, admissions, retention, and graduation requirements. 
  • Ability to develop and deliver programs and presentations.
