Assistant Paralegal
Job Description

Job Summary:

Paralegal Assistant in the Clinical Law Programs (CLP) at the University of Nebraska College of Law. Performs paralegal duties for the CLP in a law office setting. Works primarily in the Nebraska Innocence Clinic, but also provides routine support for the Clinical Law Programs. In addition to paralegal duties, also performs receptionist, legal, clerical, and general clerical/office duties in a law office setting.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree plus three (3) years of professional office/secretarial experience.
    • Any combination of five (5) years of completed relevant post-secondary education and/or experience, such as:
    • High school diploma plus five (5) years of professional office/secretarial experience; OR
    • Associate degree in related field plus three (3) years of professional office/secretarial experience; OR
    • Bachelor's degree in related field plus one (1) year of professional office/secretarial experience
  • Demonstrated competency in email, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software programs.
  • Experience must demonstrate excellent organizational, detail orientation, proofreading, editing, grammar, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, work under minimal supervision, and learn new software programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required:

  • Legal clerical training.
  • State and federal court litigation experience is desired.
  • At least two years' professional experience in the legal field is highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of clerical and receptionist duties in a law office setting.
  • Basic level knowledge of creative software such as Adobe and experience creating fillable forms and converting documents to PDF.
  • Basic level knowledge of software programs used in the Clinical Law Programs for practice management and in various substantive areas of law (i.e., child support calculations software, bankruptcy preparation software, law office management software), and various legal search engines (i.e., Lexis and Westlaw).

The ideal candidate will have experience that demonstrates excellent organizational, proofreading, editing, grammar, communication, and interpersonal skills. They will be detail-oriented, take initiative, work under minimal supervision, and be able to learn new software programs.
