Job Description

Job Summary:

Join the dynamic team in the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center (Explore Center) to provide coordination of programming for pre-professional students. The Coordinator for Pre-Professional Advising coordinates, plans, and delivers pre-professional programming and assists with training for advising staff concerning pre-professional advising items.

Programming includes, but is not limited to, workshop series', field trips, club meetings, learning communities, programming for special UNL groups, etc. Provides comprehensive advising services to a caseload of pre-health, pre-law, undeclared, and pre-engineering students in the Explore Center. Applies knowledge of cultural context, differences, and institutional/social barriers that influence the student experience in order to apply effective advising strategies for all students. Maintains a thorough knowledge of complex academic program and professional school requirements and academic policy information. Collaborates with the Explore Center team and other campus offices to engage in best practices programming to aid student retention efforts. Engages in the development, leadership, delivery, and assessment of pre-professional student programs aimed at students' exploration of and optimal preparation for careers in healthcare. Takes a leading role as a liaison for a strategic large and/or complex pre-professional area (pre-nursing, pre-law, e.g.).

Occasional evening and weekend events and advising required. Assists Explore Center as needed with advising and/or events for prospective UNL students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three (3) years relevant academic advising experience.
  • Master's degree in related field may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Experience working with students in 1:1 or group advising settings.
  • Experience researching, developing and disseminating materials/tools that support student success.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Public speaking skills including ability to communicate with individuals as well as groups, parents and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with varied student backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, deliver, and critically analyze programs and presentations toward determined student outcomes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency in a variety of current and emerging technology platforms.

Preferred Qualifications (but not required):

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or related field.
  • Experience advising pre-health and/or pre-law college students.
  • Experience using student information systems and technology platforms helpful.
  • Experience providing academic and/or social support for first generation, low-income, and/or minority college students.
  • Experience using advising software programs and/or student information systems.

Must have evidence of working in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Must have ability to learn and stay current of complex program requirements, policies, and procedures. Demonstrated ability to set deadlines, work independently toward goals, and make necessary decisions required to continue forward progress on projects. Ability to represent the Explore Center in a professional manner on campus committees and be a liaison with UNL colleges and/or professional health/law programs.
