Public Affairs Specialist
Job Description

Job Summary:

The Public Affairs Specialist builds and maintains strong connections between Nebraska Public Media and key stakeholders, including government officials, academic leaders, community partners, and the public. This position reports to the Chief Strategy Officer and works closely with the General Manager and the Director of Communications & Engagement.

 

This role:

  • Develops and manages communications between leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Leads board operations and engagement.
  • Designs and implements public affairs and advocacy efforts, with emphasis on federal and state legislative outreach
  • Advises leadership and Promotes the station's mission, values and achievements to elected officials and community leaders to strengthen its role as a trusted public service in Nebraska.

Nebraska Public Media offers a full spectrum of communications services to the citizens of Nebraska, the nation and the world. Some of these services include a nine-station, statewide noncommercial public television network affiliated with PBS; a nine-station, statewide noncommercial public radio network affiliated with NPR; a cutting-edge Digital Media Group; and state-of-the-art audio, video and multimedia production capability delivered via broadcast, satellite, cable, Internet and broadband delivery channels.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, political science, public relations or a related field.
  • Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Three (3) years of experience in communications, public relations, political science or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining relationships with contacts at community, university, state and federal government levels.
  • Ability to analyze and contextualize political trends at all levels of government.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively under pressure.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively across many departments.
  • Proficiencyin MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point.
  • Proficiency with Allegiance or other CRM.

Preferred Qualifications (but not required):

  • Five (5) years of experience in communications, public relations, political science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of media industry.
